The President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, made a phone call to the President of the Lebanese University, Professor Bassam Badran, and offered him his condolences on the martyrdom of the Director of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hussein Bazzi and Dr. Mortada Sorour, in the Israeli bombing that occurred on the university campus this afternoon in the Hadath area.
President Aoun condemned the targeting of the Faculty of Science, “this great national educational edifice that brings together Lebanese youth from their various affiliations and qualifies them to contribute to building the Lebanon of the tomorrow they dream of.”
President Aoun said: “What happened today at the Faculty of Science is a condemnable crime by all standards, and a flagrant violation of international laws and norms that prohibit attacks on educational institutions and civilians. It is a new chapter in the targeting of civilians, whether in their villages and towns, or in their work centers or places of study. As we condemn this serious attack, we extend our deepest condolences from the family of the two martyrs, the family of the Lebanese University, the educational staff, and the students, stressing that the bombing of academic and scientific monuments is an assault on knowledge, humanity, and the right Lebanese people in educational attainment and a safe life.”
He added: "The repeated Israeli attacks on civilian institutions in Lebanon hold the international community responsible for urgent action to put an end to these violations and ensure protection for Lebanon and its educational and civil institutions. The Lebanese University will remain, despite everything it is exposed to, a beacon of knowledge and thought, and the attacks will not undermine the will of the Lebanese to cling to knowledge and life. May God have mercy on the two martyrs, and protect Lebanon."
